What lies behind the no-show phenomenon in cultural venues? How often does a visitor purchase a ticket but not show up, leaving an empty seat and a figure to be interpreted? The panel offers an in-depth study dedicated to a topic increasingly felt by cultural institutions, starting with the Highlights of the research conducted by Guido Guerzoni and formules for MidaTicket, which will be published as “Monographic Report: Analysis of the no-show” as part of the “Big data and Places of Culture” project.
The no-show is not a statistical anomaly, but a factor that concretely affects visitor flow organization, capacity planning, visitor experience, and the economic balance of cultural venues.
The research analyzes the phenomenon from two perspectives: the physiological no-show, which varies according to different factors and samples of analysis – such as the channel of purchase, the type of venues (large attractors vs. smaller realities) or the nature of the event (ordinary admission vs. temporary exhibition) – and the no-show attributable to exogenous factors, which was deepened in the Turin case to understand the influence of external elements – such as weather conditions, the calling of public transport strikes or the presence of other concurrent events – on audience behavior.
The panel will offer food for thought and set the stage for a discussion of possible no-show mitigation strategies, showing how the smart use of data and technology can help make our cultural venues more efficient and sustainable.
