THE ENJOYMENT OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE EXPERIENCE OF THE AMEI – Session II

THE ENJOYMENT OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE EXPERIENCE OF THE AMEI
Sponsored and organized by AMEI – Association of Italian Ecclesiastical Museums
Session II – Ecclesiastical Museums and Territory

THE ASSOCIATION OF ITALIAN ECCLESIASTIC MUSEUMS was founded in 1996 to coordinate the many ecclesiastical museums, both large and small, in Italy: it therefore carries out mentoring, liaison and support for ecclesiastical and religious museums, offering its members tools and opportunities for growth, training and comparison.
In their relationship with the local area, church museums realize one of the cornerstones of their mission. Barbara Mastrocola illustrates the experience of the diocesan museum of San Severino Marche, the MARec Museo dell’Arte Recuperata, opened in 2022, welcoming part of the diocesan ecclesiastical cultural heritage recovered from the rubble of the 2016 earthquake: in it, works of art, after transfers, cataloguing, temporary storage, and restoration, find a home in a concrete, affective and cultural sense, waiting to return to their places of origin. The experience of the Art and Faith Project, promoted by the Episcopal Citadel of Gerace, to which the Diocesan Museum is attached, also speaks of Museums and Territory: Giuseppe Mantella illustrates a Project now in its eighth edition, aimed at knowledge, restoration and enhancement of the historical and artistic heritage of the Diocese of Locri-Gerace. Over the years, the Episcopal Citadel of Gerace has become a place of training for young architects, art historians, conservators, restorers, diagnosticians and archivists who, coming from different Italian universities, through confrontation and integration between different skills, have been able to enrich their training and mature a unique experience.
