Giuliano Romalli graduated in Humanities with a specialization in Medieval Art History, and earned both a two-year postgraduate Diploma in Historical and Artistic Heritage and a PhD in Art History.
From 2012 to 2023, he served as an Art Historian Officer at the Italian Ministry of Culture, first working at the Soprintendenza ABAP for the provinces of Venice, Belluno, Padua, and Treviso, later at the Directorate-General for Museums, and finally at the Central Institute for Restoration. There, he designed and directed major restoration projects dedicated to some of the greatest masterpieces of Italian art and collaborated on internationally significant conservation initiatives.
Since 2024, following his success in the national public leadership competition SNA8, organized by the National School of Administration – Presidency of the Council of Ministers, he has been a senior official at the Ministry of Culture, where he headed Service II “Cultural Institutes” within the Directorate-General for Education, Research, and Cultural Institutes. In this capacity, he was responsible for coordination, regulation, funding, supervision, and enhancement of cultural institutes (public non-economic bodies, private-law entities, associations, and foundations of particular importance, recognized through specific legislative measures or public tenders), as well as for managing activities related to the Council of Committees and National Editions.
Since July 2025, he has been Director of the Central Institute for the Digitalization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library, where he oversees the digital transformation process of Italy’s cultural heritage and manages the implementation of the major Ecomic Project, the Digital Ecosystem of Cultural Heritage, funded through the Ministry of Culture’s PNRR program with an allocation of €500 million.
He is the author of numerous scholarly publications on medieval art history, architectural and urban history, and on the protection and promotion of cultural heritage. He currently teaches Medieval Art History in the five-year degree program in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the Higher Education School of the Central Institute for Restoration.
