Session II – Inhabiting Memory. A sustainable home on the road to Europe.
In collaboration with Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura
Remembr-House / Houses of Remembrance is a traveling exhibition, reflecting on the value of home as a fundamental right and place of personal identity, through an installation made entirely of honeycomb cardboard: lightweight, sustainable and transportable. The project is the result of a collaboration between Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura, an instrumental entity of the Compagnia di San Paolo of Turin, and the Museo Nazionale dell’Ebraismo Italiano e della Shoah – MEIS of Ferrara, as part of the European program CERV – Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values.
The documentary holdings of the Compagnia di San Paolo Historical Archives and the EGELI Gestioni Fund, which collects the lists of property and houses seized from Italian Jews in the Piedmont and Ligurian territories after the racist laws of 1938, are the starting point from which hundreds of Italian and European students have developed paths of research, reflection and creativity, transforming stories of loss and dispossession into an opportunity for civic awareness.
The resulting exhibit is a cardboard house, a modular, sustainable, fully recyclable and easily transportable structure that embodies the message it stands for: a house that can “travel with you,” that can be assembled and disassembled, capable of storing memories, welcoming stories, memories and new ideas at each stage of its European journey. After its first stop in Turin, the exhibition reached Madrid, Ferrara and other European cities, bringing with it a message of sustainability, participation and shared memory.
