NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGISTS ASSOCIATION

The National Association of Archaeologists (ANA) is the professional association that unites and represents all Italian archaeologists, regardless of the field and field of work in which they practice.
The ANA has a territorial structure spread throughout all Italian regions, thanks to which it intervenes capillarily, with competence and experience, on all national, regional and local issues, to protect the category of archaeologists and the archaeological heritage.
Since 2016 it has obtained recognition from the Ministry of Economic Development as the representative institution of Italian archaeologists (under Law 4/2013 on professions not organized in orders or colleges).
Thanks to the continuous interlocution with all institutions, at any level, the National Association of Archaeologists has participated and participates in all the main concertation tables on national and local policies concerning cultural heritage and those of the related professions.
By virtue of the ANA’s driving force, the first national law recognizing the professional figure of the archaeologist and other cultural heritage professionals was passed in 2014 (Law 110/2014). Its implementing regulation was approved in 2019 (DM 244/2019) incorporating much of the guidance provided by the Association and establishing the List of Cultural Heritage Professionals at the MiBACT: it is the first concrete instrument to protect the profession of archaeologists in Italy.
On the international front, the ANA contributed to Italy’s ratification of the Malta Convention (1992) and has been heard several times before national parliamentary bodies regarding the ratification of the Faro Convention (2005). Representatives of the Association are in contact with the main national associations representing archaeologists in the EU member states to define common paths under the banner of integrating regulations and procedures aimed at building an integrated European professional landscape.
ANA’s action is conducted through its national (Presidency, Secretariat, Executive, Colleges) and regional (Sections, Committees) bodies. All bodies and offices are renewed every three years and are open to participation by any archaeologist in good standing. The National Association of Archaeologists also provides a national Code of Ethics to which all its members are bound and through which the association acts as promoter, guarantor, and judge of the professional ethics, procedures, and scientific standards of archaeologists working in Italy and abroad.
In 2016 the ANA was admitted into Confprofessioni, the Italian Confederation of Liberal Professions founded in 1966, which is the main organization representing freelancers in Italy(http://www.confprofessioni.eu).
