Martina Bagnoli is the Director of the Gallerie Estensi since December 2015 and President of the Europeana Foundation since February 2022. An art historian by training, Martina Bagnoli has over twenty years of experience in the international field. Born and raised in Italy, she completed her university studies abroad, first at the University of Cambridge where she obtained a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree and later at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where she obtained her doctorate with honours. A medievalist by training, she has an important bibliography to her credit. Before being nominated Director of the Estensi Galleries, she was Curator in Charge of the medieval art collections at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, where she curated several exhibitions including Treasures of Heaven. Saints, Relics and Devotion in Medieval Europe, organized in collaboration with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the British Museum, and A Feast for the Senses. Art and Experience in Medieval Europe. Martina Bagnoli has taught at various American universities, including Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. At the Estense Galleries, Bagnoli has launched a vast program of transformations to make the museum more welcoming and accessible: from installations to acquisitions, from programming to the digitization of the collections, also introducing major innovations such as the use of sharing platforms available on the EstenseDigital Library website (www.edl.beniculturali.it).
