L’Associazione Nazionale Archeologi (ANA) is a non-profit association that represents archaeologists operating in Italy and protects the image and interests of the professional category within society. L’Associazione Nazionale Archeologi is the largest trade association in Italy. It has over 2000 members and it’s existing with its own regional structures and democratically elected representatives in 15 Italian regions. In 2016 it was recognized by the Ministry of Economic Development as a professional association that meets the requirements set by law n. 4/2013 on the subject of professions without order and register.
The first objective achieved by the ANA was the legal recognition and regulation of the profession for the thousands of archaeologists who work every day for the Italian archaeological heritage, a result obtained through bills, initiatives and events. The legal recognition was achieved in 2014 with the law n. 110 (Modification to the code of cultural heritage and landscape, as per legislative decree 22nd January 2004, n. 42, concerning professionals of cultural heritage, and establishment of national lists of the professionals). The ratification by the Italian Government of the European Convention for the Protection of Archaeological Heritage was another important result, containing the fundamental principles of Preventive archaeology, obtained with Law n. 57/2015. ANA promotes research, protection, knowledge, proper management and development of the Italian, European and Mediterranean archaeological heritage. It also promotes the meeting, dialogue and cooperation between archaeologists and among all the associations, relations and organizations operating in Italy and abroad in the field of archeology. ANA encourages the approach of the people to Archaeology and inspires the cultural and social function of archaeologist’s work, as well as its positive effects on the economic life of the country.
