Most museums display only a fraction of their collections. Providing broader, fairer, and more transparent access to the storehouses is one of the major challenges facing the museum sector today. The V&A East Storehouse offers an innovative solution: a “behind-the-scenes” access to the museum storehouse, visited by more than 200,000 people in the first six months of its opening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With more than 340,000 objects, 350,000 books and 1,000 archives, the facility offers more than 100 curated exhibitions that address themes of provenance, diversity and creative inspiration, while also enhancing the work of the professionals who care for them. The world’s first Order-an-Object system allows anyone to reserve and handle objects from the collection, bringing the public closer to the study of material culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia Haseldine’s keynote will trace the origins of the project, which began as a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the co-design process with local communities, and the solutions adopted for dynamic and flexible access to the collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be followed by a discussion on the topic of museum deposits between Georgia Haseldine, V&A East Storehouse, and Roberta Alteri, Colosseum Archaeological Park, with a focus on the experience of Invisible Deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
