Hillary Spencer is the President and CEO of the Children’s Museum of the Upstate in Greenville, South Carolina. Most recently, she served as Director of Nomad Exhibitions (US), a firm specializing in design, production, and business strategy for traveling exhibitions. Before opening the North American office of Nomad in 2018, Hillary spent 10 years as the Assistant Director of Global Business Development at the American Museum of Natural History. In her role at AMNH, she managed operational infrastructure and business strategy for the traveling exhibitions program. Previously, Hillary worked at a number of other museums throughout the US, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Getty Center, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the Pasadena Museum of California Art, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the Museum of Latin American Art.
Hillary Spencer is world-traveling, risk-taking museum professional with strong roots in the South. She hails from the hometown of Pensacola, FL and completed her undergraduate degree at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. She holds a master’s degree in Art History from Brooklyn College. In 2016 Hillary participated in the Getty Leadership Institute’s NextGen program, an executive education program for museum leaders. For the past year, she has been leading a global conversation on museum leadership and the role of risk in creating change.
